Teenagers today are under significant stress. Learning how to take care of themselves is a major goal for this class. Students taking this course will learn tools for dealing with their stress. They will discover how their emotions play a part in their own lives and in their interactions with others. And finally, they will learn how to become aware of their internal dialogue and how it affects their life.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the three major brain components, which play a part in stress reduction.
  2. Understand how our bodies, emotions, and thoughts all play a part in stress and how to become aware of them.
  3. Utilize the five senses in order to work with stress reduction.
  4. Learn a variety of breathing techniques that help with stress reduction.
  5. Learn self-compassion and kindness practices.
  6. Learn how to calm oneself, and enhance your life with mindfulness!
  7. Other benefits include better sleep, as well as various focusing techniques useful for school and athletics.

Cheryl Blackington has been a teacher with Forest Hills Schools for 35 years and has turned her attention to teaching teens how to manage their stress using mindfulness because of the growing numbers of anxious teens. She is certified by .b Mindfulness in Schools. In addition, she has taken Mindful Schools online eight week curriculum class, continued her own personal growth and practice, and has taught teens Mindfulness for a number of years. Cheryl presents to schools and organizations because of the passionate belief that all students should learn basic self care and loving kindness tools.
