We eat for many reasons besides physical hunger. We eat when we are sad, lonely, angry, stressed, or bored. We eat at the computer and watching TV. We eat to entertain ourselves, because it’s time, and just because the food is there. Our world is filled with distraction, so we eat mindlessly and engage in behavior that leads to a less than ideal relationship to our bodies.  And, in a culture that idolizes the perfect body, self-criticism and self-judgment prevail.

Challenges with how to eat and how to treat our bodies often result in emotional distress, obesity, and other eating-related health problems. Diets that focus on weight loss have not been shown to be effective in the long term and may even contribute to weight gain and greater despair. Taking a more holistic approach, mindful eating can help people end overeating and make friends with their bodies, use awareness to manage their emotions, and guide their behavior.

In day one of the workshop, learn about mindfulness and how it relates to mindful eating. Understand the evidence from current research in the field of mindful eating, including the research conducted by the presenter on her program entitled, Eat for Life. Learn simple but powerful practices to change how you eat and view your body forever.

In day two, both professionals and the general public can benefit from understanding the barriers and challenges in learning and practicing mindful eating. Drawing from her experience of teaching mindful eating for a decade, Dr. Rossy will describe real-life problems that people encounter in practicing mindful eating and discuss the methods for overcoming them. There will be a combination of presentation, mindful eating, and guided meditations. Suitable for professionals and the general public.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

DAY 1

  1. Review the current research in the field of mindful eating.
  2. Define mindfulness.
  3. Practice mindfulness exercises.
  4. List the six elements of the acronym “BASICS” as a mindfulness-based intervention for eating concerns.
  5. Practice a guided mindful eating exercise.
  6. Review current research in the field of body image.
  7. Describe the use of lovingkindness in a mindful eating program.

DAY 2

  1. Describe how mindfulness is used to manage thoughts and emotions.
  2. Describe how mindfulness is used to improve eating behaviors.
  3. Describe three common challenges in developing a mindful eating practice.
  4. Practice a guided mindful eating exercise.
  5. Practice an easy mindful yoga practice for use with anyone.
  6. Discuss the concept of Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)

 

Lynn RossyLynn Rossy, Ph.D. is a health psychologist, author, and researcher specializing in mindfulness-based interventions for eating, stress, and workplace wellness. She combined her decades long personal practice of mindfulness with her love of eating and scientific investigation to produce the program called Eat for Life. This program is scientifically proven to help people to be more mindful, love their bodies, and end overeating. She published the book, The Mindfulness-Based Eating Solution (2016), to bring these concepts to the public. Her book was named in the Top Ten Mindfulness Books of 2016 by Mindful.org. She is the Vice President of The Center for Mindful Eating—an international non-profit organization training professionals in the field of mindful eating. She is always on the move, giving workshops and presentations on the topic of mindfulness and mindful eating to everyone from small businesses to international scientific conferences.

Timeline for CE/CPEs

Day One:

9:00 a.m.– 10:00 a.m. – Welcome, disclosures, learning objectives for both days, define and practice mindfulness and discuss in dyads and large group

10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m – Review the research on mindful eating and dieting and answer questions

11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. – Teach the BASICS of mindful eating, have a mindful eating experience, and answer questions

12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Lead a silent mindful eating experience for lunch

1:00 – 1:15 p.m. –  Free time

1:15 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Discuss participants’ experience of eating mindfully. Have participants discuss in dyads and then conduct larger group discussion.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Discussion of research and culture as it relates to body image and body positivity.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Discuss the many types of mindfulness exercises that are useful when working with issues related to eating and body image. Practice body lovingkindness meditation. Group discussion of practice. And give homework exercise for the evening.

Day Two:

9:00 a.m.– 10:00 a.m. – Welcome, learning Objectives for the day, practice mindfulness meditation, participants discuss in dyads and then large group their most common difficulties in eating mindfully.

10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Do a presentation on the common issues that arise in mindful eating. These issues include overcoming the diet mentality, focus on weight loss vs. well-being, engaging in regular mindfulness practice, all-or-nothing thinking, emotional eating, and the beliefs about food addiction. Describe how mindfulness of thoughts and emotions can counteract these issues and bring clarity to the participant about what is driving their behavior and beliefs. – Lead meditations.

12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Lead a silent mindful eating experience for lunch

1:00 – 1:15 p.m. – Free time

1:15 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Discuss participants’ experience of eating mindfully. Have participants discuss in dyads and then conduct larger group discussion.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Talk about the importance of exercise in a mindful eating program, the reasons people exercise, a new way of viewing movement as enjoyable and delicious, and have participants discuss how to increase their movement throughout the day. Do movement activity.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Discussion of the fast food culture and the culture of consumption, the wanting mind vs. physical hunger, and not knowing how or what to cook. Introduce participants to the idea of reducetarianism and have people explore how they might become more conscious about their consumption of food. Talk about how what and how we eat as a part of our spiritual path.
